About Otis Redding

Generally regarded as the single most influential male soul artist of the '60s, Otis Redding was one of the first artists to broaden his appeal to white audiences with a raw, spontaneous style that bore a stark contrast to the smooth, sophisticated music of Motown.
He was born in Dawson, Georgia in 1941. Growing up in Georgia in the 50’s, he listened to songs by Sam Cooke and Little Richard and decided that he would like to be a singer himself. He joined a group called Johnny Jenkins and the Pine toppers in Macon, which was Little Richard's hometown. He recorded with that group on the Confederate label beginning in 1960. One of Otis' first recordings, Shout Bamalama, is done in the style made famous by Little Richard in the 50's.
It is ironic that Otis being black got his start on a label whose image was the Confederate Flag.
Shout Bamalama was later recorded and released by Dennis Wheeler, a white artist singing black R&B, wasn't accepted in the black music culture. Even though the record was moving up the charts, United Artist Records believed if a black artist released Shout Bamalama, it would be a bigger record.
Dennis' lead vocal was replaced on the same music tracks by Mickey Murray, a black artist, which went on to sell over a million 45's and was Mickey's start and went on to record several other songs' of Otis'.
Otis' version was re-released again after Otis became well known.
A turning point in Otis Redding's career came when he drove Johnny Jenkins to Memphis for a recording session. The session was held at a new studio known as Stax and although it was Jenkins who had initially attracted the attention of the record producers, Otis was able to do some recording of his own at the end of the session. He managed to get a song that he had written titled These Arms Of Mine, which was also originally recorded by two other artist, DENNIS WHEELER and ALSO by BUDDY LEACH & THE PLAYBOYS who were also CONFEDERATE RECORDS' artist, released with him as the lead vocalist (Otis Redding & THE PINE TOPPERS) and it made the top twenty on the R&B charts in 1963.
Aretha Franklin recorded Otis' Respect on the Atlantic label and it went to number one on the pop charts in the Spring of 1967. That year Otis Redding made an appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival. His performance in front of a predominately white audience was superb. It resulted in an album Otis Redding/Jimi Hendrix Experience and the film of that concert is still available. Redding went to Sausalito to relax and, inspired by his experience at the Monterey Pop Festival, wrote [with Steve Cropper] what proved to be his most successful song [Sittin' On] The Dock Of The Bay. On December 10 while flying to a scheduled performance, his airplane crashed into Lake Monona in Madison, Wisconsin. Michael Bell is the A&R / Producer For the RAPP RECORDS LABEL in the following genre of music: R&B, Hip Hop, Rap, Jazz and Blues.
Michael began Playing Trombone and writing Original Songs at the age of 13yrs. Old, and later began Playing Guitar, Bass and Drums for various local groups in the Detroit area. In 1984, he became a Church Organistt and Minister of Music, and later went on to record several albums as a Record Producer. He Produced his first big recording in 1999, on the Contemporary Christian Artist “Jeannine Byerly”. He has since Written and Produced several more r and b, contemporary jazz, gospel, hip hop and christian Albums, of which, some have had much Charted Radio Success.
Michael has Played Guitar with such recording artists as: David Ruffin, Tyrone Davis, Laura Lee, The Floaters Orchestra, Michael Bell & The Wings Of Freedom, Orlando Draper, and many others. He has become a Proficient Songwriter, Record Producer and Studio Engineer.
Michael was a finalist of four songs in three categories in the UK 2004 International Songwriting Contest. He’s had fifteen #1 songs on the broadjam Top 10 Charts in the past three years that ranges from rhythm and blues to christian contemporary. As Michael would say, “writing a song is like taking a drink of water, I don’t have to think about how to do it, it comes so naturally”.
